With an increasing number of genetic tests available, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recognizes the importance of making information about these tests easily accessible to
health care providers, researchers, and others. Therefore, NIH launched the Genetic Testing Registry (GTR), a free online resource that provides a
centralized location for comprehensive genetic test information that is voluntarily submitted by test providers. The intended audience for the GTR is health care providers and researchers.

The overarching goal of the GTR is to advance the public health and research into the genetic basis of health and disease. As such, the Registry will have several key functions:

Encourage providers of genetic tests to enhance transparency by publicly sharing information about the scientific basis and utility of their tests; |

|
Provide a public resource to locate laboratories that offer particular tests; and |
|
|
| |
|
Facilitate genetic and genomic data-sharing for research and new scientific discoveries. |

|
| |
Clinical experts  from within NIH and members of a medical genetics working group of the National Center
for Biotechnology Information Board of Scientific Counselors will be consulted on an ongoing basis about the content and structure of the GTR. Continued interaction with
stakeholders-such as laboratory test developers, manufacturers, health care providers, patient and consumer groups, and researchers-will also help in optimizing the GTR's utility.
